BUILDING A MARKET – ONE DAY AT A TIME

If you woke up today wondering how you are going to expand your market for your product or service, just be glad you are not Oprah Winfrey. As I’ve written before, her new cable channel OWN is really struggling after 15 months of lackluster viewership. The network will soon be available to about 83 million homes nationwide (about 200 million people). However, at this point, only 180,000 people (out of 200 million) watch it daily and only 50,000 women ages 25 to 54 tune in daily.

Building a new market is tough. I know since I am in the mist of helping to launch a new national retirement website (www.retireUSA.net) aimed at the 79 million baby-boomers heading into retirement. So, what’s the key to building a market?

As I point out in my book, it’s concentrating on the little things and taking action every day that will make a big difference over time. For most small businesses, there are simply not very many magic bullets.  Unfortunately, most of us spend far too much time working “in our business,” not “on our business.” So, as you finish your morning coffee, just ask yourself, what are you doing today to expand your market?
